28TE Flush Deck - Sea Water Impeller (315 Yanmar)

Post by RustyTank »

Any tips on replacing the sea water impeller on a 2004 28TE Flush Deck on the 315 Yanmar?

Looks aufully tight ... should I pull off the pump... or just the manifold on the pump... or just try to get the cover off and switch it out in place...

Looking for as many "lessons learned" before I make the attempt and learn more the HARD way...

Mine is a 2006 Flush Deck so I think yours would be close to the same tight access. I attempted to just pull the cover which was not easy, but I got it off. I then tried to get the old impeller out which was impossible. Long story short, remove the pump and replace the impeller and O ring. Check the cover for wear and replace it too if worn. Mine looked OK. Once you do this once, the next time will be much easier.

Rusty, Donya posted an excellent description for doing this in the "Albin Maintenance" forum on Wednesday, February 6 2008 at 9:04 pm, and you'll find 89 other posts if you search that forum for "impeller". Sorry I'm not quite savvy enough to actually quote this one for you. The method is to remove the pump.

My mechanic changed my impeller without removing the pump. For next time he said he would do it the easy way and remove the pump!

My mechanic tried to do it the "easy" way by just removing the cover. He ended up having to remove the pump.

Pulling the pump is the only way to go with these engines on the 28. One last tip, if you haven't found out already. When I tried to pull the pump on my 2004 (sounds identical to yours), I found it wouldn't come off the studs. Too close to an engine mount! I even removed the cover, but I couldn't get enough clearance to drop the pump. Ended up removing the bottom stud with a set of vice grips. Replaced it with a bolt when it came time to reassemble, so it's way easier now! Read about same on some other forum, but I can't remember where. Worked for me.
