Persistant turbo exhaust leak-Yanmar-FYI

Well, after changing out my exhaust elbow and my exhaust mixer, I've had a presistant leak at the turbo/exhaust elbow joint. I fiddled with it for several hours with no luck. The mechanic who normally works on my boat said that there was a service bulletin on this, and sure enough he produced one. After following the service bulletin's directions the leak was still there. So, I wrote up a work order and turned it over to the pro's. Long story short they ordered a new gasket and clamp will no luck either. Seems that there were deposits left on the turbo that had to be ground off with a Dremil tool. Once this was done, the joint was tight and didn't leak. When you Yanmar guys have to replace your exhaust elbow and mixer, please keep this in mind. This was one of the few things I could reach to work on and even though lining up everything wasn't the easiest job, it's worth tryng to save money. Haven't gotten the bill so I'm not sure I saved much money. The parts alone ended up being $1207.00 from Mack Boring.

should, use the WD-40; if it shouldn't move and does, use the duct tape.

Good idea...now where did I put that 1200 degree Duct Tape????

Hey Chief,

have you ever washed your turbo? I have the procedure for doing it back in NY, but I haven't tried it yet. It's something I've been meaning to do.

I had mine washed a couple of months ago during some other work, the mechanic actually did it for.............shhhhhh..........free

I didn't notice any difference, but my records showed it had never been done...so I thought I'd try it.
