Replacing Engine Zincs

Post by earlcarlo »

I just have a few questions about replacing the Engine Zincs.
1. Do you need to apply teflon tape or paste to the brass threads before putting it back in?
2. Is there a recommended torque used when tightening?
3. Is it necessary to drain the raw water out?
4. Anything else that is recommended before I attempt this on my own?

Thanks in advance. Earl

Never use any tape in the zinc to component installation. The contact between the zinc or whatever it is attached to and the part to be protected must be a resistance-free as possible.
I'm not sure of the torque, but you don't want to force the zinc in too tightly. When installation is done, run the engine and look for any leakage of raw water. If it's dripping, use a bit more torque but be careful.

You can use teflon paste and you will still get a conductivity.

I have got the Zincs yet. I have a 2001 31TE. The engines are 6LP-STE. Since I haven't replace engine zincs before, I would like to be prepared. Thanks Earl

Boatzincs.com is a great source. You can order the zincs with or without the brass plugs. A few of the zincs may require "houdini like skills " due to limited access but certainly do-able.
