Actually the best emergency bilge pump is what I think Vikings and Ocean Yachts do in their boats as standard practice. They have two raw water cooling cocks or valves in line of each other. One is attached to draw water from the outside of the boat throught the inlet. The other has a pick up on the bottom of the bilge near the water-line at the stern of the boat (i.e. if this is actually making contact with water it is an Emergency).

If this situation arises you close the cock leading outside and open the one to the bilge. You will now be drawing water from your bilge thorough your engine and depositing it outside the boat. It amazing how much water an engine churns through.

I've been thinking about putting on on our 28.

We were advised by our surveyor to add a valve like this. He said you have to make sure you label very well, because if opened accidentally, it wouldn't take long for it to sink your boat.

Actually, to correct myself, I would assume the bilge pick up would be best placed near the bottom of your engine, for if these get flooded your pretty muched screwed anyway.
