I have a offer accepted on a older 28 , and waiting for the weather to warm up a bit to do the survey . I had asked about the hot water heater and the a/c heater and water pumps for the fresh water and sewage etc and the answers where they worked a couple of years a go etc . So ..... can any one give me any ideas on the costs to replace some of this and what else to look for. Also ,that hot water tank looks a little tight , whats that like to wrestle out of there. Trying to pick your brains for headaches and costs to replace some of this on the older boats . And Remember
Keep her between the red and the greens
And wet on the bottom
and away from the Bouys
On the dirty days
When she wants to show her bottom

Re: Replacement parts
Check www.defender.com Usually much more selection & better prices than West & others.

Re: Replacement parts
I use Defender as well. Never had a shipping problem and prices are good. Another source I have used is boatfix.com.Veebyes2 wrote:Check http://www.defender.com Usually much more selection & better prices than West & others.
Search the board for water heater. We had a user named TomCatRio that went through that task. From what I read it wasn't fun.

Re: Replacement parts
I had 5 yearitis...a boat malady which usually isn't hard to cure, but is expensive. I bought my boat when it was 5 years old and within 1 year replaced:
The bow thruster,
anchor relay,
the anchor rode,
batteries ( both ),
water pump).
Had to have the heat exchanger acid cleaned,
replaced the radar,
depth sounder,
gps
and had to have a valve seal kit installed ( which Mack Boring paid for thank heavens)
Last year the AC/Heat unit was replaced ,and had to fabricate a rudder plate on the exterior of the boat that apparently wasn't installed at the factory. ( at nine years old)
I wouldn't even venture a guess on the cost....but you can figure it would be expensive even if you did most of the work yourself, which I didn't.
I truly am the perfect example that a boat is a hole in the water in which you throw money.

Yes it all sounds true ,that if you want to throw your money away -just buy a boat. But its a tough life this boating world and it just takes more money to get us buy [or stupider] Thx for the replys and the links to the web sites and the good reading . ITS JUST AMAZING HOW MUCH MONEY YOU CAN SPEND ON A 28 FT BOAT .

Re: Replacement parts
Getting ready to do some work on my water heater as well. The water no longer heats up on AC power, but limped through the last half of '09 utilizing the heat exchanger transferred from the engine coolant. As I recall the electric heating element was $80 - $89 at .... where else .... "Defender". Still, a pain to replace. 1st step: I took the house 4D battery out last week, which on my boat is crammed in right next to the tank / an awkward 2 man job. This will allow me to (hopefully) spin the tank to remove the element as the holding tank is in the way otherwise. Possibly will need to remove the macerator as well for access. For a 28 ft. boat we sure have quite a few amenities .... therefore everything is tight! While I'm at it, I'll replace the coolant lines coming from and returning to the engine. Nothing like a little PM.
