Rudder Squawk

Post by Carl »

While docking the boat the other night I noticed while turning the wheel that it has developed a squeaking noise. Anyone had this happen, and if so, what did you lube to quiet things down? Just thought I would ask before I start spraying things down. I did lift the hatch and it sounds like its coming from the rudder shaft. It was dark, so I didnt spend a lot of time looking.

I once had a squeaky prop shaft. The packing was shot...it would no longer absorb water so it was dry and squeaky.

Carl,
I had the exact same thing last week too, for the first time. Drove me crazy all morning. When my wife arrived I had her turn the wheel from stop to stop, as I sprayed Boeshied T9 on the moving parts of the rudder......sqweak gone in seconds.
This week it's still nice and quiet.

Thanks Bob, I will do the same this weekend. It makes the boat sound "old"!
