New anchor opinions for a 28te

I'm looking to pick up a new anchor for my 28te. A 22lb lewmar claw anchor is my first choice as it seems to fit best in my anchor roller as opposed to some of the other anchors. Unsure if I should get the 33lb Lewmar claw instead. Any opinions on holding power on the claw anchors? I usually anchor in waters from 12'-45', with a soft bottom of sand or mud. My set up is a Horizon 700 windlass, 250ft 1/2" rode and 50' 1/4 G4 chain.

We have a 22lb Lewmar claw which according to all the literature will normally be more than adequate for a good night's sleep in Puget Sound and Admiralty Inlet. I would think much the same conditions exist within San Francisco Bay and environs. Probably the location and bottom you choose is more important than the weight and shape of iron you put down. The scope you have available, especially with all that chain, really makes anything more than 22lb superfluous unless you get caught on a lee shore during some 100-year November storm. Anyway the 33lb anchor with all that rode is probably too heavy for the windlass and will blow the fuse as you cat it. Finally, make sure all the swivels and other connections are sized right and are properly wired down and maintained.

22 lb Delta should work fine.. Always seems to hook right up on my 31. best anchor I ever had try Wholesalemarine.com in fla. Paid $183 & had it the next day

I run the 22 lb. delta as well and she has never failed me.

Other gear is a Horizon 500, 30 ft. of 1/4" chain and 300 ft. of 3 strand rode. A long 3 week soak for the rode in water with a qt. of fabric softener worked wonders to soften her up.

Does the soak in softner help prevent kinks and twist in the rode? I have had twist in the line causeing it to spit out of the windlass gypsy on occasion. I also have a swivel at the anchor and another at the rode to boat connection. Both swievls work well and are cleaned regularly.

I have been using the 22lb delta anchor in San Francisco Bay and the Delta . Never had any issue with it , even sitting in strong currents fishing for sturgeon I have pretty much the same set-up of anchor rode and chain as you do.

The soak softened the line removing all hockles, kinks and twists. I thought I was going to jump to brait/plait rode, but this seems to be working so far and if it continues to do so I will soak in the locker at de-commissioning time this fall in preperation for next season. As well, I have a swivel at anchor to chain connection, but a splice from chain to rode. Use the search function for "fabric softener" or as RobS calls it "cordage pliability liquid".

22# delta on mine too.. works great in sand/grass down in FL..

The Delta is a good anchor but I had an issue with the delta self launching. After putting in a windlass and finding that I had to go up there and kick it off something needed to change. I ended up putting in a Manson. It drops by itself and has good ratings as far as holding power.

After having it self launch, I then started to have issues with the rope jumping out of the windlass and had to run up to put the rope back in. I ended up getting 25ft chain and 275ft of 8ply anchor rope. It is much more flexible and has worked fine so far this year.

I did have to make a new loop at the end of the pulpit to deal with the larger stock of the anchor

I also was using the 22lb Delta(now my backup anchor), but always had trouble with the anchor coming up backwards with digging point facing away from boat. Many times I would have to walk upto the pulpit and spin the anchor by hand to get it to come up the right way. I bought a new Lewmar 22lb claw anchor which has not givin me any trouble and works just as good if not better then my old Delta 22lb did on the 28te.
I also replace my original aluminum anchor roller that was bent from anchor troubles I had with the Delta anchor. I found a new polished stainless steel roller from Lewmar which was a perfect fit, not even needing new holes to be drilled for mounting.
