HURTH transmission - advice appreciated

Post by Don from Mystic »

My 1983 27a/c has the Lehman/Hurth setup. The output shaft seal of the drive has failed and leaks. I have the gear (which works fine otherwise) removed and have learned that it is a bit onvolved to change seals as the entire unit required disassembly (and perhaps special tools).

Hoping for names of shops that WILL work on a Hurth Drive (Preferably NE area but anywhere else is welcome) -

Many Thanks

Don,
Why not take it to Whitfords in Old Mystic? I think he is still in business. He helped my a lot when I rebuilt my Velvet drive 2 years ago.

That was the 1st place I went to with it - I have a lot of respect for the guy too. Wouldnt touch it. Went over the exploded drawings I brought and he showed me where the (explatives deleated) 'issues' were - suggested Mack Boring - they didnt reply. Atlantic trans also passed. Will likely put a diaper under it (not a huge leak) buy the $80 manual and $200 O/H kit and make it a winter project. Thanks for the advice.

Don, 27 a/c "Steadfast".

Try this guy, he's a ZF/Hurth dealer and is highly respected in the industry for both his knowledge and honesty. If you came over to Long Island via the Bridgeport - Port Jefferson Ferry he's about a half hour once you get off the ferry in Port Jefferson.
