NW 28 Albin owners
Hello everyone!
We keep our Albin on Lake Union for the offseason (Oct-May) and then have it transported to Ilwaco for the summer months.... we chase salmon, sturgeon, halibut and tuna when the weather permits. The cost of transporting the boat is getting to the point of "is it really worth it?" and taking the boat down via water is pain in the butt... been there, done that.
Here is my question: Do any of you have a trailer for your boat? I would love to hear how that experience is for you guys... cost, difficulty, maintenance etc...
Cheers!
Anthony

Yes, there are several people who have had custom trailers built for their 28' TE's.
One alternative might be to go up to Neah Bay rather than Ilwaco. That is not such a long run in the boat, but the fishing is similar, and you avoid having to trailer or have the boat shipped.
Still, though, if I had a 28' TE in these waters, I would want a trailer to be able to take advantage of the wide variety of boating opportunities in the area. Think gunkholing in Puget Sound and the San Juans and fishing in the ocean like you already do, but then add the possibility of spending a weekend cruising up Lake Chelan, or exploring Lake Roosevelt or the Upper Columbia River. Coeur d'Alene and Priest Lake in Idaho.... Detroit Lake in Oregon... Lake Shasta in California... these all become options if you have a trailer.

Plan B may include a 5 day trip to Neah Bay or something....
My dad lives down near Ilwaco so that is why we've always gone there in the past. We're just having a hard time justifying this year with the small salmon quota and the cost of transporting it. I just can't imagine not fishing down there this summer.... plus I am addicted to tuna fishing now!
I checked into a trailer a few years ago and we decided against it at the time.... mostly was because of the tow rig requirements. That is why I posted this question, I would love to hear how much maintenance, how easy/difficult it is to tow etc.... or maybe if someone lives in the Seatle/Portland area who would be willing to rent their trailer to us for the trip down and back? Just searching for options because it's not going to be any less expensive next year.

BUMP!!
I just called the transport company that we have used the last few years and it appears the economy has got the best of them... or perhaps they retired early? Either way, I need to find a new transport company to use.
Here's what I'm looking for:
Are there any NW 28 owners who have a trailer I could possibly rent???
Or, I'm looking for a few referrals for transport companies.
Thanks in advance guys!

I am hesitant to recommend things to other people because experiences can vary but on the Shamrock owners web site several people had good experiences with Capt. Will Glass in NJ. 609 348-2206 and cell 609 517-1644. They said he was very nice to deal with and had low mileage rates. I was going to use him to bring a boat down from Main but it failed the survey.

Re: NW 28 Albin owners
Anthony, We have spoken before on the radio and in the salty dogs. I am sorry to hear you are thinking of leaving Mad Money home this summer. By the way we are supposed to have a great Salmon season this year (The expectations are seven days a week through September), and I don't have to tell you about Tuna.
I originally wanted to get a trailer for a number of reasons, one of which was I would not need to leave the boat in the water all winter, but I decided against it when I realized my 1/2 ton Suburban would not tow it. Not only would I have had to get a trailer, but a 1 ton truck as well. Now I think of it as a 'boat' and don't worry about it. When I bring it up to your neighborhood, I plan to run it.
A friend of mine used to keep his 28 (the Cra sea) in Hammond, where I keep mine in the summer. He has a trailer, and could tell you what you need to know about towing it. PM me if you want and I will get you his phone number.
Hope to see you this summer.

PM sent.
MadMoney will be in Ilwaco this year for sure! I am just trying to figure out the best way to get it there.... the transport company we used in the past is not around anymore so I'm starting over. A good friend of mine runs a boat dealership but I don't think he has a trailer that will accomodate the skeg. My plan B is to run the boat down to Ilwaco but logistically, it's difficult. Coordinating a crew that can drop what they are doing to take advantage of a weather window is challenging but I think I have my bases covered.
It's going to be a GREAT fishing season!!!

Re: NW 28 Albin owners
Anthony! I saw you yesterday in the Ship Canal. I'm pretty sure you recognized me, because you were pointing and waving. We had a great weekend in the fresh water, plus the bottom is all clean now.
Hey, if you want someone with experience to help you run the boat down to Ilwaco, I'd be happy to do so, and have a pretty flexible schedule. I've never personally run a boat down the coast, so that would be new to me, but I'd be eager to do it, weather permitting.
I'll send you a PM.

Re: NW 28 Albin owners
Not on the same topic, but I thought I might find the right audience in this thread (i.e. Puget Sound Albin owners).
Seems like every weekend there is a 28TE cruising through Agate Pass, right in front of our house. To date I have not been able to get a read on the boats name. This past weekend it went through twice, once northbound and once southbound.
If the owner is on the board, give a shout out.

I sent you an email before I saw this post... what were you doing up here in the Poison Water? I wish I would have know you were coming up... we could have met up and swapped some stories. Love the looks of your boat....
Joreyn -
I ran through Agate Pass on Sunday morning around 9:00am heading back to Seattle.... I go to Poulsbo quite a bit so I might be the one you see burning diesel. My boat is named MadMoney, it is a blue hull with the oyster white pilot house and I fly an American Flag out of my transom rod holder. Sound familiar?
Cheers!

Had to be you! Our home is on the West side of the pass, just slightly South of the channel marker. Weekends like the one just past are great for sitting on the deck and reviewing the parade of boats going through the Pass.

You're a lucky man to have a home in such a beautiful area.... I simply love Agate Pass. What a gorgeous place to sit back, enjoy the weather and watch boats cruise back and forth! I'll be sure to send you a note the next time I intend to head over that way....
Cheers!

Re: NW 28 Albin owners
Well I finally got the weather window needed and moved our boat from Seattle to Ilwaco earlier this week.... here is the story:
The adventure started on Sunday night, I left the comfort on my slip on Lake Union about 9:30pm and headed through the locks. I pulled into Shilshole Marina around 11:00pm and started looking at the updated forecasts. My friend Tim met me at 4:00am and we were off. The forecast for the Straits was marginal at best but the window was for the early am with SCA winds picking up by late morning. I knew we would have smooth sailing if we could just get through the Eastern half of the Straits. Thankfully, NOAA missed on Sunday’s forecast and with their Ken Griffey Jr. batting average, they missed on Monday’s too. We ran into some confused waters around Mid Channel Bank but it laid down once we got to Woody’s Ridge. From there it was great until the Dungeness Spit area. More 3’-4’ confused seas till just after Port Angeles. The further west we went…. the better it got. We rounded Neah Bay about noon and were greeted with a greasy flat ocean. As we chugged south to LaPush we several Humpback whales (I believe) breeching and a pod of Killer Whales. We arrived in LaPush about 2:30, got our slip assignment and relaxed with a few cocktails.
Since I am not very familiar with the bar at LaPush, we passed on the grey light departure and waited for first light which was about 5:15. Once outside the buoys we were again blessed with an amazing ocean. I plotted a course that would take us to the 125 Latitude line off Ilwaco and the Astoria Canyon. We hit the Canyon at 11:00 on the nose and started deploying the cedar plugs and zukers. The water temp was 62 degrees when we started and climbed as high as 65.2! And yes…. I am going to double check the accuracy of my temp gauge those are ridiculously warm temps for mid June! The water was a beautiful blue and there were birds everywhere. I kept waiting for the sound we all dream of…. line screaming off a reel! After 3 hours of searching we pulled the lines in and headed east to the mouth of the Columbia River. I pulled MadMoney into the slip at 4:00 and you know what comes next, cocktails!!
Here are some distance readings from the trip:
Shilshole to Neah Bay – 113
Shilshole to LaPush – 156
Shilshole to Ilwaco (including a swing offshore) – 309
147 gallons of diesel consumed.
Below is a link to my Spot tracking page. We sent the link to our friends and family so they could track our progress. Once I got in cell range, my phone started beeping with several text messages saying “we noticed you took the offshore route…. you must be fishing!” Guilty.

In the message section on the left, you can see that there is a page for each day of our trip. Also, in the upper right hand corner of the map you can change the map to a satellite shot which is kind of cool. You can see our halibut spots as well as the canyons offshore.

Anthony,
Sounds like a great trip. I'm happy to hear all went well. Any engine or system problems? Hopefully you have some pictures to post.
