Throttle/Control Cable Replacement on 28TE

I did a quick search and came up empty. Has anyone replaced the control cable on a 28TE? I have a new 16' control cable from teleflex/morse but I am unsure if its the right one? Does anyone have a part number on this item? Also, any advice for swapping it out?

Last year I was going to replace mine but only got as far as some research. As far as I can tell the closest match for our 1995 28TE is a Morse 33C Red Jacket cable. This was based on what the original looks like. I never got around to measuring what length I need, and Morse's part numbers depend on what length the cable is. My Fisheries Supply catalog shows them in the range MOR#33C-(number representing how long the cable is, in feet, so your 16-footer would be a MOR#33C-16). Fisheries price is $52.24 for this size.

From Fisheries Supply catalog: "Morse 33C Red Jacket cables are the most widely used cable type in the world. It is an economical workhorse cable. Cable adapter kits available for use with Mercury, Mercruiser, Johnson/Evinrude, and OMC sterndrives. 3" travel. 10-32 SAE threads. 8" minimum bend radius." The photo in this catalog shows cable ends just like what is currently installed in our boat, and there are enough different kinds of kits and accessories readily available to make it work no matter what, probably better than it does now.

Sorry, my experience at this kind of tinkering is practically nil so I have no advice about how to do this work. I liken it to teaching myself how to do surgery. If a friend has any knowledge about automotive cabling, consider getting a consult.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. I may go with the 33C extreme model; Teleflex told me it's a much smoother cable and can bend more.

I have not replaced my cable but the shift cable came out of its clamp and would not change gears. I downloaded a picture of the throttle control unit from the Morse-teleflex web site so I could see how to adjust the shift cable movement. It apparently was incorrectly set because it had a lot of resistance after either forward or reverse was engaged. After adjusting it correctly it shifts and throttles up very smoothly. I took out the four screws in the Morse control and pulled it up to work on it. Not hard to do. Loosen all the cable ties before pulling the unit up.
