Albin 28 - Molded Polyethylene Fuel Tank (PLASTIC)

Post by fiti huahine »

Can anyone comment if Albin produced boats with a molded polyethylene fuel tank (PLASTIC) installed in the boat? I am looking at an albin 28 and I asked if the tank had been replaced due to a problem and owner states it was stock from Albin - 2003. Anyone have one and comment on problems with this type tank?

My 2006 has one and so far so good. The only problem I have had is keeping it full!

From everything I have read on the subject the plastic fuel tanks are preferred over aluminum or steel. The latter two corrode or rust from the salt water in the bilge and eventually leak. Also any water that condenses inside the tank will rust the steel.

2003 TE engine box with red plastic fuel tank. I change my fuel filters oncest a year and while there is usually some crap in them the vacuum gauge I have has never gone up from baseline at all. Plastic tanks with diesel is a great way to go.

Our 36' ET has metal tanks (I'm not sure if they're SS or aluminum, but I think SS). With diesel it's slighly less of a concern, but plastic tanks still make me nervous. If you get a fire onboard, that plastic will melt pretty quickly, and once it does, you've got a real problem on your hand, especially if it's gasoline.

That said, yes, plastic tanks are clearly less maintenance. But our tanks appear to be coated in some sort of clear finish and have zero corrosion, inside or out. Seven years old.
