Tool kits to keep on board

Post by zinbaad »

I have to say that getting the 31 TE has been great but definetly requires a vast knowledge of its workings & quite a bit more maintenance than I expected. This aint the trailer boat I could keep in the yard to wax paint & prep over the winter at my leisure, it requires , hopefully a "short Haul" an careful planning to do all the hull necessites like painting, waxing zincs & such quickly while on the lift, quickly and efficently.
Anyways, since I plan on doing most of the engine maintenace I am looking to keep on board most of the wrenches, sockets & other tools needed for most situations that might occur while far from home also. Having the twin Yanmar 315's it would be nice to hear any particular metric or other tools anyone has needed in a "Situation". I do keep extra oil/fuel/ antifreeze, belts, impeller aboard for backups. You never know what you are gonna need until..... Open for sugestions :?:

With any diesel number one is learning and practising how to change fuel filters and how bleed the fuel system. I buy and keep the necessary wrenches right at the point of use. I secure them with a lanyard if need be so they are always where I need them.

I don't have Yanmars so I can't answer that one for you.
My policy is to buy bend grind fabricate if a special tool is needed for those emergency type jobs. I also bought a metric box/open and a socket set when I had my Cummins. Also the appropriate tubing wrench set be it metric or standard as it applies.
Another very handy tool is a hose removal pick. This is an angled "awl" shaped tool that is designed to insert between the hose and fitting and free it up without damage.
I also use nut drivers for hose clamps as it makes things much easier esp when you need to go by feel. I think I have a 5/16,1/4 and a 7mm aboard. All different brands/colors so I can ask the first mate by color and she doesn't need to find her reading glasses first.
It's the little things that facilitate weaseling out of emergencies

Gorilla tape - I purchased one year at the boat. Never had to use it...yet.

Duct Tape - Makes nice stripes on your bolsters.

How come all my good tools disappear out of my home toolbox & turn up on the boat?
