Pretty Quiet in here

Post by Jeff Lavallee »

Just wondering how many Albin 27 owners there are in this club. I know it is not boating season yet, but I am hoping to meet some people from the Boston area to kind of guide me through the rookie season just a few months away.

I don't own a 27 any longer but I kept my 1986 27 from new to 2000. I reckon that everything good & bad about the 27 happened to me in that time. :P It was a great & loyal member of our family during that time. Too bad we outgrew her.

Veebyes2,
Glad to get a reply!! I may have to pick your brain in the next few months about the 27. It is my first boat and will probably try and do as much as possible on my own. It seems like the manufacturer really does not pay attention to the owners. Thats too bad. Do you remember what engine your 27 had??

Jeff, I work with a woman who she and her husband just bought a 27 last season. They are on a mooring in Newburyport on the Merrimac and possibly lurking about on this site. Look for "June Bug". Maybe you can help each other out.

Pitou,
Thanks for the tip! If you see her at work let her know as well. I'm not sure how much help I will be this year, but by the end of the season I hope to have gone through the boat and have a pretty good handle on things. Are there any local mechanics that you recommend? Do you keep yours in Essex? I am on the waiting list for The Parker River for now. I will probably be looking for a local canvas/ sunbrella guy as well

Jeff,

You will find that this site tends to lean more towards the more recent breed of Albins like the TEs and such. There is also an Albin Cruisers site on yahoo that you have to ask permission to join. They tend to be A25/A27 oriented, but the site is a little quirky and there are long threads of basically nothing but small talk. With that said, there is still a huge amount of knowledge on that site and I would recommend you join and utilize both that site and this site for as much information as you can get on your new toy. I personally have a 27AC, but it has the good old Lehman 61HP. She will do 12 knots in a following current WOT, which I have only done once and do not plan to again as I do not want to fry anything. We tend to cruise at 8-8.5 knots, burning 3/4 gph, not bad and very comfortable.

I cannot help you with accomodations unless your interested in a Maine Rendevous. Good luck and I will help if I can, I am fairly new to the Albin world myself, 3 years and learning every day.

I have seen the Yahoo group and will try and join. I have noticed that it seems to be more for the newer models. I wonder if you have anyschematics or diagrams of the boat. It sounds like they all differ a little, but it may help me figure out how to work on the different systems. Georgetown looks like it is pretty close to Phippsburg and Fort Popham. My wife and I went up that way a few years ago and loved it. Not sure how far by water, but maybe toward the end of the season I will be brave enough to sail on up. Any info/ advice about the boat or boating would be appreciated

Jeff

Maybe we can learn this boat together. We purchased our A27 in June and now have about 4 months experience with her. Most of last summer was just getting to figure our what we bought and working off the surveyor comments. We have a 1987 SC model with the Isuzu 157hp engine. My most pressing issues at the mment is to fix a "sticky" starter solonoid on the engine and I think I want to instal an autopilot in the spring. I am a former sailor and the sailboat I owned for 15 years had the same Lehman 4D61 enging that many of the A27's have, so I might be able to help some of those owners with some answers.

John,
As soon as I got mine in the yard I had to cover it- snow ( bought it in Nov, delivered in Dec. I will go through the surveyors notes and try and get after the big things as soon as spring hits. I have the 6 cyl Nissan Diesel 78 Horse. Our boat is a 1985. Let me know how you make out with the starter.

Mine had a Westerbeke W100, a rare one for the AC version at the time. At the time there was only one other 27AC with the Westerbeke & that one happened to be in Bermuda too. Back then the Westerbeke was a special order for the AC. Biggest I've seen in a 27, a Sport version, is a Cummins 210hp. Now that there is one fast 27.

Jeff .... For a diesel mechanic I highly recommend Guy Crudelle of Crudelle Equipment Repair out of Gloucester. Great guy / works fast and is very knowledgeable. He has 5 guys on the road including himself / services most of the fishing fleet out of Gloucester, high speed ferries in Boston along with all us recreational boaters and is often brought in by insurance companies as an expert for adjusting services. Last summer's rate $80/hour.

For canvas work I use Dave Lenzi out of Essex / originally Marblehead. Reasonable, good work and creative. If your boat is on a trailer his barn has a huge overhead to accomodate large boats.

Boating out of Essex at Perkins Marine for 30+ years and I'm only 21  .

You'll find reasonable off road diesel at the south side of Plum Island at the IBYC. Happy boating!

Hi Jeff, I have a 1988 Albin 27 which I purchased two years ago, can't wait to get it back in the water. I also checked out the other website but found it difficult to access, I like this site much better, lots of good info. Mine has the 160HP Isuzu engine with about 1200 hours on it. It would be nice to know how many 27 owners are on this site. Enjoy your boating season.

Dave

Sounds like your 1988 and my 1987 are similar---both with the Isuzu engine. I notice that you are located in Blind Bay, Nova Scotia. We are in Northern Michigan, but in early April we are visiting relatives in Maryland-Deleware-Pennsylvania and then in the last half of April we are heading to Nova Scotia to visit with the couple that purchased our sailboat in April of 2008. They are in Halifax. Where is Blind Bay relative to Halifax.

Kevin,
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I am not on a trailer. I think I know right where the Ipswich Bay Yacht Club is. I will compare the price with the Parker River Marina. Pretty interesting with all of the different engines. I should have joined this group before I bought. I am not sure why, but for some reason I always wanted an Albin. Now that I have joined, I am very surprised to see how the manufacturer treats the owners, and the lack of information about the older boats. Other than through other owners. Either way, I hope to see you out there this summer. Also, do you use a hauler or are you stored in the Marina Yard. The hauler that delivered my boat was from NJ, where I bought it. I will have to find a local guy for that as well. Only lived in Newbury for 2 years, I am originally from central Ma and just getting to know the area.

Jeff, I am a year round tenant at Perkins. Most in the area that haul use Jocelyn from Newburyport for hauling services. http://www.jocelynmarine.com/index.html They seem to have a good reputation.

Dave Lenzi will travel, so don't let that inhibit you. The sooner you make the call the better as most boaters seem to wait until spring and then you have to wait. I find winter pricing better as well.

IBYC is close to me and as I said "off road diesel" ie .. no road tax and Deval is talking about another .20/gal. to add to the Mass. portion. For me that's another $25.00 / tank on the already $45.00 / tank ROAD TAX. .... Ask your marina if they sell off road. Most marinas will say it is not available which is bull. May need to bring that discussion to the bilge!
