Cummins Engine
I am about to buy a 1999 Albin TE 28 with the Cummins Engine with about 600 hours on it. The boat also has a generator which I thought is a bit unusual. Anyone have any comments about the engine and the generator/
Thanks

Cummins makes a very good engine, it would have been my engine of choice had I found one. 600 hours isn't a lot and a well maintained engine should last you many years to come. Certainly won't have any trouble finding someone to work on it. As far as the Generator goes, what kinds is it?? Did it come factory installed? How many hours.

Generators are becoming more and more common on cruising boats, as the technology has become drastically more efficient and quiet in recent years. As you go up in size, you will find that generators are used for more and more uses, as the inherent efficiencies of 120vac power make it more economical than large batteries and multiple alternators.

Search
You probably already tried this, but.... did you click on the "Search" icon at the top of the page and enter "Cummins" in the search field that pops up? There are quite a few references to Albins and Cummins engines on this board.
Although I have a Mercruiser/BMW in mine, I've (generally) heard excellent reviews on the Cummins. Before purchasing my 28TE I was negotiating for one with a 300+ HP Cummins but the owner decided not to sell (he loved the boat too much to let it go). I've had mine for almost 2 years and am very pleased with my 28TE.
Good luck.

BMW Engine
I watch yachtworld.com for albins coming on the market. Once in a blue moon you'll see one pop up for sale with a BMW engine; but this is rare. Not sure why Albin only powered a limited number with these engines, but I sure would be interested in knowing. I can speculate that w/the GMs they were able to get better performance for not a lot of price impact. ?? Hopefully someone can shed some light on this question.
The Mercruiser/BMW engine I have is a 210 HP. Cruises around 13 knots which is slow for the Albin design.
Pardon my ignorance, but I'm not sure how to answer the torque question.

Hi Ray!
Welcome to the board. And, Welcome to Albins. I have the Peninsular engine but everyone seems to agree that the Cummins is a good one!
All input is appreciated on this board. Even from Tomcat <smile> I am still trying to figure out some of his posts! (just kidding)

Have a 1996 with a Cummins in it. My mechanic says it's a real workhorse that just runs and runs...........
The only real problem everyone alludes to with the Cummins is the noise.... these engines are just plain loud!!! (At cruising speed, you need to yell to the person seated next to you).
