It turns the Alternator into a three stage charger, offers more effecient charging, also kinder on startup to the belt etc

Do you need to break into the windings to make only 1 or 2 of them work (that would require taking the alternator apart) or could it work by just giving less voltage to the field and hence let the alternator produce less ?
