Albin Tournament Express Speed
I know that this is an old topic, but someone came by my boat the other day and said that he used to have an 1993 Albin like mine (2001 28 feet) with a Cummins engine that would cruise at 24 knots and max out at 28 knots. I don't think he was setting me up, and he swore to those numbers. I have the Yanmar 6LP STE.
Thus, I offer my numbers and ask if the board thinks them reasonably or maybe I should do some fine tuning. I would love to be able to cruise at 18 knots or higher but am hesitant to run at near to full out to accomplish this.
4 persons on board, full water tank, 2/3 full fuel tank, and 1-2 foot choppy seas
700 rpm-3.2 knots; 3000 rpm-13.7 knots; 3600 rpm-19.0 knots; 3800 rpm-20.2 knots. Bronze four blade 19LH19 prop in goog condition. When by myself, I usually cruise at 3100 and 14 knots.
Was he kidding me or should the boat perform better?

Re: Albin Tournament Express Speed
Your rpm and speeds seem about what I am used to seeing with the 28TE (Yanmar 315 hp) aboard and on line here. The greater than 20 kt. speeds, even if converted to statuate miles per hour would not equal the figures that were given to you. Some folks have a penchant for exaggerating figures and some of those people firmly believe their inaccuracies. If the boat was coaxed over a waterfall of some height, greater speeds than what we are used to might be achieved. In free-fall, the boat would accelerated at about 32feet per second per second, or one-g. The nice part about that is that no fuel is needed. When you can, slow down and enjoy the ride. In addition to saving fuel, engine peripherals such as the raw water pump and the alternator will thank you and provide longer lives.

I also have a 28te with yanmar 315. Your numbers seem to be the same as mine. The only thing I do to increase speed, is I only feel my tank 3/4 full. I can feel drag when I'm fully loaded with fuel, fresh water and gear so my tank 3/4 full reduces some weight. My top speed was about 22 knots, this was with a very lite load and low fuel and going with a strong current. I usually cruise 2800rpm-3200rpm.

Re: Albin Tournament Express Speed
With my 250 HP Cummins I cruise at 18 knots at 2200 RPM, the torque peak. Did you ask the person what the HP was? It is also possible that the 93 Albin weighed less than the newer boats with all the amenities added. The guys with the 370 hp Cummins can hit those speeds. I also adjust the trim tabs carefully to get the maximum speed and it makes several knots difference.

Re: Albin Tournament Express Speed
With fishing gear and 4 people on board+ food, 6 man life raft and the usual stuff I make about 14 knots at 3100 RPM, I have a 19X19 LH prop and a 6LP-STE-300HP. Interesting to see that with a 250HP can make 18kts on a 28TE. I'm sure it depends on the prop and tranny setup, in addition to overall weight.
I woudl need to have a 6knot current pushing me to make 20kts.

Santosha: 2003 TE, Yanmar 315, 19x19 4-blade.
I have always questioned if the tach is realy reading correctly.
But GPS top speed consistantly is 24-24.5 knots depending on meduim load. Tach reading 3750-3800 usually.
If I've got 9 people aboard.....different story.
In the spring with sanded bottom and fresh bottom paint, NO barnicles (on metal rudder support strut) or slime on hull surfaces, I can see 25 kts. flat out, but no more than that.

Re: Albin Tournament Express Speed
Yes, my boat is propped at the maximum and this is in fairly smooth water but well loaded. It has an 18x25.5 4 blade prop and a ZF transmission with a 1.64 ratio. The cruising RPM is supposed to be 2300 but the torque peak is 2200 so I keep it there. I am debating whether to take an inch off the pitch because at WOT I get 2650 RPM, only 50 RPM above the rated peak HP. I wondered what I was missing with the 250 until Pitou posted his numbers on the 370 and he gets a much higher top end.

2002 28TE, Cummins 370 6BTA,ZF1:5 tranny, 20" 4 bl nibral prop, ridiculous amounts of gear and equipment, 2/3 fuel = 28 knots @ WOT 3000 RPM. Full of fuel = 26.5-27 knots. Do I run it this way often????? NO ..... save fuel enjoy the ride and don't spill your drink! 18 - 22 knots is good.

I have the same, a 2001 28' with the same Yanmar 6LP STE and the numbers you are getting look pretty good to me. Usually run at 3400 max and get an average of around 17.6 to say 18.2 depending on load and tab setting w/o current or heavy wind.
