Hurricane Ike

Post by Mariner »

Do we have any members down that way? I hope everyone's ok. It's clear that there's a lot of people without power down there. I know at least one web forum that I frequent is off line because they are located in Houston.

I know we have members in that area but there is no way to find them. Most members don't list the city, state they live in in the profile.
There was discussion about Hanna on AOG but it's been quiet regarding IKE.
I'm sure with power problems and everything else going on, posting a message here is a low priority. Hopefully we will hear from them in a few days. The high here (Baltimore) is 94 today. Light winds, humidity 72% right now.

Hurricane remnants seem to be following me around. Got rain & a little wind from Hanna remnants on the Chesapeake Eastern shore last Sat. The last of Ike blew through here in Niagara Falls just a few hours ago. Again, no big deal. Just a few good squalls.

I'm still hearing nothing from my company's ops center in Houston. No word from any of the employees. I'm sure they all got out just fine as they took Friday off to evacuate, but still, I hope they're doing ok.

By the way, sorry for the late response, but there are three Albin 28's at the Galveston yacht basin. All of them are on my pier and all survived w/ limited damage. These boats three were all very lucky as the basin of about 500 boats total suffered major damage and is still not operating. On the sail boat pier, all but one boat (approx. 40 boats broke completely loose and sank or ended up at other locations). In the rest of the marina I guess that 30% or more of the boats were totaled. This does not include the dry stack storage of about 100-200 boats that completely burned down and destroyed every boat.

I stayed on the island and when I went to look for my Albin 28 the day after the hurricane wading through 3 foot high water I was amazed to see her still floating and that she only incurred some minor scratches. At least two people stayed on their boats and the stories they had to tell are, to say the least, interesting. One of their boats sank during the height of the hurricane (between 10-2 pm) and they had to go to another boat by dingy.
