5 year Exhaust Elbow gave it up after 7 years.
Well, it finally happened. I went down to check the boat over after Earnie went through, fired her up and smoke began to roll out of the side vents. Seems that my exhaust elbow had broken in half. This is one of those very expensive "replace at 5 years" items...I had it check in the spring and it looked good.......I guess not good enough. Anyhow, I'm doing some searching to see if I can find a good price on one. Anyone pushing 5 years or so on their Yanmar, you might want to get ready.....I'm sure it's going to be BREAK OUT ANOTHER THOUSAND......

Yea Paul I agree. I pay some boatyard mechanic 60.00 an hour mostly because he can get to it and I can't. I can't even get down into the center hatch between the helm/navigators seat. I can stand and partially squat down and that's about it. I'm hoping that this is one of the few things I can do myself. Anyone here have any experience with this let me know any tricks or issues that may come up. I'm hoping that it all just slips out and slips back in without the usual problems. I have yet to find any "deals" on the internet. I did find a Stainless Steel elbow, but the 1000.00 or so bucks plus shipping was a little stiff.

don't know if it helps much, but...
it makes me feel better. i do a fresh water flush after most outings, also use 'saltaway' ..
got a cap for my sea water strainer that has a fresh water hose connection. i don't connect the hose the high pressure water, just a bucket.
.
did that with my sail boat engine for 25 years, never had to replace any exhaust system hardware on it.
hey, it couldn't hurt.

Well, the deed is done. Three non-trained guys, three hours. I won't complain about Marine Mechanics again....but I'll continue to bitch about the price of parts. As easy as this looks on my Albin it is NOT a cake walk. Even though it's only a few bolts and clamps, nothing wants to line back up easily. The hardest part was getting the mixing elbow out of the exhaust pipe and the second hardest part was getting it back in the exhaust pipe, but with lots of Dawn dish soap and elbow grease it's back together. No real tricks to pass on....pretty straight forward replacement. Saved myself several hundred dollars in labor and that was worth it. Total cost of replacing both elbows, two new crush gaskets, one new clamp and the brass water intake that goes into the mixing elbow was $1207.00.
