31TE

Post by Dave39 »

Have any of you 31TE single diesel owners had a 28TE previously, or know the comparision of the two rides? Also, does the single have a skeg hung rudder like the 28's. Thanks.

28 to 35

Post by Legacy »

May not be helpful but I went from a 28te to a 35te and the entire experience is very different. The 28 was great fun and a good solid ride in a heavy chop. I had her for 8 years and regularly ventured out 50 miles. No keel on the new-to-me boat as I have twins now but when looking at the wife-o-meter, she can take a lot more in a 35! Sometimes I miss the 28's size and other times I want a 40. I've been on the 31 and the liveability is significantly better than the 28. Good luck.

I was fortunate to have been able to go on a short fishing trip aboard the Joint Venture at the NE Rendezvous this past June. Man O Man what 3 feet does! The hull was a single screw 450 Cummins and provided plenty of power and the platform sure was stable. Lots of room down below, a nice aft berth for 2, ample space for relaxing in the pilothouse and plenty more room in the cockpit. Overall I WISH I OWNED ONE !!! 3 feet more feels like a lot more. It's amazing what 28 plus 3 adds up to.

Shoot Joint Venture and e-mail or PM I'm sure he'll be glad to share.

I think Albin put the skegged rudder on all their late-model singles. Our 36' Express Trawler has it.

The 31 has a skegged rudder - it is not a full keel , but shallow from the bow back approx. 3/4 to a pronounced cutout then down 3 1/2 feet for the shaftlog and rudder. That accounts for the 31 drawing 4 feet - makes one watch the depthfinder.
The cutout is designed to allow water to pass thru the keel thus avoiding the hull squirreling in a beam or quartering sea. I had a Fortier previously and it was tough to handle.
The 31 with a 12 1/2 beam and hard chines sits solid in the water and little lean in the sharp turns.
