Trailering an Albin 27?
Hi Everyone,
Were new to the group and looking for info from anyone who trailers their Albin 27.

Hi Bill and Julie. Welcome to AOG. The 27 is a great boat but you may run into a problem towing one legally without a permit. The beam is wider than most (all?) states limits. You would first have to check your states laws and find out about the permit. I think the beam is 9'8". Someone will jump in here and correct me if I'm wrong.
That said, if your only towing occasionally, you may get away with it.
If your going to trailer all the time consider the permit or the A25.

Phil Macken has trailered his A27, has found he no longer needs the trailer and has it for sale.
I've exchanged email with him in the past couple of days; he likes to talk boats as a number of us do.

When I owned a 27 it was trailered twice a year. Aside from size issues, it required special care in handling in getting loaded onto & off the trailer.
The 27 is not a trailerboat as such. It is not a high speed boat either. Not to complain about the build of the boat, but the hull is not designed to take the abuse that a typical trailerboat has to endure.
We had to be careful to support the hull at or near interior strong points such as under the engine bed & bulkheads. Failure to do so would result in visible hull deforming & the crackle of fiberglass being bent.
By all means trailer a 27, but know what you can & cannot do & do it very carefully.

Most trailers are build for boats that primarily transfer all their weight to the keel, as is the case with modern planing and deep-V hulls. But on a displacement hull such as the old A-boats, I would immagine that a trailer more similar to what you would use for a sailboat would be in order, but perhaps with even more bunks and supports.
Regardless, it would clearly be a custom job.

Now and then there is an inquiry about trailering an Albin so I thought I would offer some first hand experience.
I live in Minnesota. I bought an Albin 27 Family Cruiser, "Quo Vadis", in Georgetown SC. I had a trailer built for it in Port Clinton Ohio, picked it up and went to Georgetown to get the boat. Pulled it with a 1ton diesel pickup through eight states back to Mn.
I had a trucking company get the necessary overwidth permits, $450. I didn't have any police even look at me, but that is probably cuz I had the permits.
Absolutly no problem with the load and this winter I will, without hesitation, pull Quo Vadis to the Fort Meyers area for a cruise to the "keys". You need a good trailer and a good truck, then just pay attention to what you are doing.
I now feel I can take her where I want to cruise. For me it's a good plan.

The trailer was built by Loadmaster Trailer LTD, Port Clinton OH. It's a tandom axle gal steel and will carry 12,000lbs. It's 31 feet long, multiple bunks(no rollers) side guides(for loading), 2"5/16 ball, elec brakes, LED water proof lights, 7k lb jack stand. I would estimate about 650lbs of tonque weight when loaded. The trailer itself weighs 1900 lbs.
