Leak from the exhaust through hull?

Post by Saltdog »

I finally ran down what I thought was a rudder leak on my 2001 28. The water appears to be coming in where the exhaust exits through the hull. It only occurs in rough water (not at the dock). Having identified that when I returned to port I found all of the screws on the outside of that fitting were tight except for the top one.

What happens is when the boat rocks and the top of the exhaust goes under water, water runs in. The screw that is loose is stripped and won't tighten to squeeze the rubber gasket.

Does anyone have any experience solving this problem?

Thanks

West Marine sells a fiberglass filler/repair kit? I'm sorry, I can't remember the name. I used it on my other boat to fill some chips and screw holes on my bow pulpit. It held up for 10+ years. I'll look around and see if I can find the name.

Anyone else?

Yup. That's it. I used the white-grey. Put some touch-up paint over it. Worked great. Easy to use.
