250hr service questions

The original owner had the valves adjusted at the 50hr service. When I look in the Yanmar manual I have for the 6LP-STP, valve adjustment is listed as 250hrs then every 1000 hours. Is there a newer tech bulletin on this? Even though it was done at 50hrs, I'm planning on having it done again. Am I wasting my money or is it a good investment? The manual also calls for a turbo wash at 250hrs. Has anyone done this? Yanmar tech seemed suprised it was called for in my manual at 250hr service.

I can't answer your question about valves. I have the Peninsular. My manual shows valve adjustment at 500 and 1000 hrs.

What is a turbo wash?

Each Yanmar tech I spoke to was consistent about the valve adjustment every 250hrs and timing belt at 1000hrs or 5yrs, whichever comes first. The only person to mention turbo wash was the service administrator at one of the Mack Boring office. Call Bob at the Mack Boring Tech Support line, 1-866-526-9717. I've spoken with him numerous times - a good source of current info IMO.

Thanks for the info. I've just had the valves adjusted. I'm planning on doing the turbo wash later this year. As I understand the process, the cleaning solution is slowly sprayed into the turbo intake while the engine is under load, at or near cruise RPM.

This topic interested me so I ran a search over at boatdiesel.com.
Results were surprising. Everything from fact to fiction as to whether or not it's worth it.
There was a post around here about a stuck turbo at spring launch last year.

I have searched the topic on boatdiesel and that's partly why I asked here. They seem all over the place on the topic. See if I could get and little AOG feedback to it.

I read through those posts. Sounds like mechanics think it's a waste of time and engineers felt it was preventative maintenance.
Might be overkill but to do it yourself isn't expensive. The only other turbo I owned was a Mitsubishi (car). I don't recall anything in the manual about that.
I'll check my Peninsular manual tomorrow.
