life jackets

I was in the dollar store the other day, and while searching for some glow sticks for an upcoming wedding, I thought, sheesh, for a buck, or a buck and a half, these should almost be required on a life jacket. Most of us have higher quality jackets on board, and some of us probably attach whistles, but the reality is, that the worst situations happen at the worst times. At night, and under less than ideal conditions. Sometimes too noisy to hear that whistle. I looked up the lights at West marine, and 8 jackets X $16 is a bit much. But all over the internet, you can get 6" sticks for a buck and a half. Shelf life is about two years according to my research, but I've had 10 year sticks still work for me. Almost to cheap not to get eh? JMHO

Almar,
I have to keep thinking that there is a reason the cheap ones are so cheap. But, I also think that if they are good enough for kids to play with they should be safe. I am wondering if exposure to salt or brackish water would cause a problem?

Anyone else out there have personal experience with light sticks?

While I don't have much experience or information on light sticks, another good idea to fancy up PFDs is to add refelctive tape. Good reflective (waterproof) tape can be bought in any good hardware store. All you need is about 6" on both forward sides of the jacket.
