Generator Platform

Post by seasalt »

I need to replace the rotted plywood under my 8 kw Northern Lights generator on my 35 TE SF.

Any ideas what material to use?

What is the best way to lift it? It sits between two hatches under the cockpit so grabbing it directly form the top looks tough.

Hi Ron,

Mine, a 6Kw Onan, sits on a 3/4 "starboard" plastic marine "plywood" platform.

To get it in the yard dropped it down into the aft hatch and then slid it forward. It's a very tight fit.

Doug,

That, in reverse order, might be the answer for me. Pull the generator aft and up, replace the board then put it back. It looks like the bottom frame under the motor mounts might have to be removed for that to happen.

I am getting all sorts of advice from friends and have a mechanic coming next week. Lots of head scratching.

My thoughts, if I were to try and do the same with mine...

Slide the generator as far aft as it will easily (reasonably!) go. Use a sawzall and cut out the forward section of the existing platform. Replace the forward section with starboard.
Now slide the generator forward onto the new material and replace the aft section. Slide it back into place and bolt it down.

It might be easier to do that in reverse (aft section then forward) due to access, but you get the idea.
