28TE holding tank

Coming from a boat with a 28 gal. holding tank, the typical 6 gal. tank on the 28TE is giving us pause as we look at these boats. We're on Lake Champlain--no discharge--so holding tank size is important.

Ric, I read that your new 10 gal. tank fit where the old one was with only a few setbacks and a little fiddling....typical boat project.

For those with larger holding tanks, how big are they and where are they installed?

I thought the 10 gallon holding tank was the standard, hopefully others chime in on this.

We've seen a lot with 6 gallon tanks. Maybe 10 became standard in later years?

Mine is 6 gallons but it is combine with the Vacu-Flush system. That system uses a lot less water per flush than a standard marine toilet. This basically more than makes up for the size difference.

We're so spoiled....28 gal. with a Vacuflush on the Trojan....

You are spoiled. I get by with the 6 gallon tank but my cruising mode is probably different. It's usually just me onboard and a slip at a marina every night. I don't use the head much at all. It's primary use is for women onboard for a day cruise.

Yes, we like to go out for the weekend, and we always anchor out.

I prefer a restaurant and bar at my destination. I don't use the galley much either.

My boat (A-30FC) was purchased from a dealer on Lake Champlain and it came with the Albin standard 9 gallon holding tank and being in Vermont no Y-valve overboard discharge was permitted. (We have the same laws up here.) I soon changed out the 9 gallon tank for a 20 gallon one that was the largest I could fit into the available space without replumbing or moving anything else. While I would have preferred a larger replacement tank, installation would have been much more difficult. I find the 20 gallon tank quite adequate because the interval between pump-outs is much longer.

Our FC30 now has a "airhead" composting toilet. No more holding tank.

Hmm, the Airhead looks interesting. How long have you had it? Is it working as advertised and to your expectations?

So....no one has installed a tank larger than 10 gal. on a 28? I realize location of a bigger tank is a huge challenge.

Not any room aboard PITOU in front of the bulkhead for anything larger. There may be a possibility of going larger with a complete swap out to the Vacu-Flush system that Ric installed as the pump is on top of the tank making some more real estate available on deck and the Y-valve for overboard or tank could be re-configured.

We can see this will be challenging. There's room for a slightly larger tank in the existing location, but without a custom fabrication, there will be a compromise on optimum size. So we'll have to measure and re-measure, and then decide whether picking up only a few gallons of capacity will be worth the huge hassle of doing it.

We're wondering about relocating the tank, but it's too soon to know where. The center hatch between the helm chairs? We'd have to think long and hard about that.

on my 2002 28te the area between the stringers under the center hatch is vacant, however whenever i need to access any under deck areas this is where i position my somewhat large and inflexable body
