Refinishing casino teak and Holly deck

Post by Capt Brad »

Hi Norseman,
Here is my deck in the basement. Three more coats and done. It’s a teak and holly veneer on about 1/8 plywood. I plan to keep it secured to plywood work surface until it’s time to begin spring Boat preps. Coming out so nice I won’t to stand on it.

I don’t know the cost, mine came with it. A lotta Albins up north here have them. Must have been an option. I think you can buy the veneer and cut to fit. I’ll ask around for a source. Got one contact whom-does yacht restoration. I know he recommended Epifane at $64 a qrt!

Aha, an option.
Be nice to find the source, but they probably don’t have the drawings, or are out of business...
If you do find the source, I’ll buy the beer.
(Plenty builders and contractors here in Fort Lauderdale who can build me a cabin sole, but they will put me in the poor house, too many mega yachts in town will drive up the prices)

I used Epifanes quite a bit, used to buy the stuff by the case and ended up paying $25 per quart. Good stuff.

I have the Albin 30FC and just started my cabin sole refinish project. I've started with the rear cabin sole. What technique are you using? I'm going to put two coats of epoxy on first and then coat with 3-4 coats of varnish. The bottom of the sole wasn't finished at all and I'm going to put a 2 coats of epoxy on it.

Did you clean the stripped teak with a teak cleaner? I have some black mold spots.

Yo Capt. Brad.
Any chance you can trace the shape on a big piece of draft paper and mail it this way?
(I will of course pay all expenses)
Send me a Private Message right here, or email csy33 (at) Comcast.net if you are interested.
Thx.

When I purchased my present boat the cabin sole was stained black and partially delaminating, supposedly from water coming out of the refrigerator when it was left off. I removed it, sanded it, tried to glue the layers back together and refinished it. After two attempts at refinishing it, it finally was beyond repair. I took it to a marine wood shop and they made a new copy for less than $150. If I had known it was that inexpensive to replace I never would have wasted hours of hard work trying to save the old one.

Good info, Thx.
That is my plan as well, get drawings to a local wood shop and have them copy it, then install. (Is it glued or screwed down?)

It is screwed down and I matched the screw holes through the wood so the screws would go back in the same holes in the fiberglass.

Do you mind shooting a picture or two next time you go on the boat?
Curious if the sole is different on a flush deck versus en engine box..?

Cool, looking forward to it.
I got screws in the floor as well, to hold the snaps for the carpet, be great to use the same screws/screw holes.

Nice Russ.
I need to get a cabin sole like that.
Is there any online drawings out there I can print and take to my local wood shop?
Measurements would be helpful, but the curves and cuts need a template. Any good idea how to copy the cabin sole layout?
Is there an Albin 28TE in Fort Lauderdale with teak/holly option?
(Lunch and beer on me..)

JB,
Used generic stripper, six applications and scraped. No way to hurry this with a veneer! As my underside was not finished, Imsanded and put 2 coats poly. Top side I sanded with 220 grit. After third coat I sanded with 600 grit. Put a total of 8 coats.
Norseman, I have some paper, might have to piece it but will trace it . Will email you so I can mail it.
