Officially posted "Hurricane Warning" for Cape and Islands.
Obama and his crowd of many choppers roared over the house last night right after dinner leaving Martha's Vineyard. They left a day early.
Oddly enough, he has flown directly over our house 3 years in a row. (He probably can't see the hand gesture I'm waving!!) ;>)

Santosha is now sitting in our driveway on blocks and stands. Pulling the 13' Whaler later today.

A good practice is to chain stands together so they cannot slip out even under severe vibration.

I'm hoping for weakening by the time she hits Cape Cod.

Back home after securing the boat. She's tied, fendered and anchored. Fridge is empty...we had to recruit help to finish the beer before it got warm
Surprisingly our marina hauled close to 1/2 the boats. Crazy because they actually feel the boats are safer in the water. But they'll take the money.
I guess we'll find out on sunday afternoon who was wiser.

I'm REALLY hoping it's the ones that stayed in...

Our marina was hauling boats like crazy. Most were not "residents" but those who have moorings at nearby clubs or very exposed docks.

What kills me is the absolute lack of preparations I saw with a couple of boats. There's a 21' CC diagonally across from me with a single 3/8 line looped over two pop-up cleats.

The boat directly across from me had an extra stern line (read "second", not third or forth. Second.) mysteriously appear before I left...Oh, and all of his canvas is up. And he's facing west.

Absolutely agree Rob. Given where my slip is and the strength of the fairly new and very robust docks I SHOULD be hit with not much more than wind (a lot of wind) and rain. The issue is of course the size of the surge and the tide it hits with. I pulled a map...

The red dot is Sonny IV secure in her slip. An east wind will move across relatively unimpeded and hit me fairly hard. However, it will do the same to all the boats sitting on blocks and stands as well. The sailboats concern me the most as masts are obviously still up and the blocking was done somewhat hastily. At a low tide I'm sheltered by a bulkhead. It would take a really big surge and surf to clear the rise to my east. If that happens...well, I don't think it would matter where the boat is.

The latest update to the forecast shows Irene to be a tropical storm by the time it hits New York.
Good news.
In our area some high winds and rain so far. We just got back from a hurricane party. High tide is not until 7:45 AM. More good news.

Doug, I do recognize the marina..
I made sure I was blocked at the highest point in the marina, having the surge float the boat of the blocks would certainly be counter productive! Still got power and internet here on Eastern LI, for now anyway..

Not too much wind right now in NW Ct. 7 1/4 inches of rain so far, basement sump pump has been running hard since 1:30 am. Still have power.

As of 9am it is officially Tropical Storm Irene as it made landfall at NYC.

Trop Storm vs. CAT 1 is huge for the policyholder's here in NY, especially in this economy, to not get hit with the CAT Windstorm Deductible. We'll see tmrw how it all plays out with the carriers...

We got word from folks at our marina that the water level is dropping and all enclosures are in tact. That's great news.
Can't get to the marina...the road is flooded and power lines are across it.

So, if I read that correctly, it doesn't matter if it's a Tropical Storm or whatever when it hits YOU, but what it was classified as when it FIRST hits the state border, at least for most of the carriers.

I've heard that Sonny is ok. Haven't seen for myself yet, hoping to soon.

Did get a photo from the yacht club. This is our main jetty. We put all new railings, electrical and lights on it over the last two years, since they were destroyed by a storm early last year.
