One of the biggest things to be carefull about is that the IPAD like any PC is just not very good in daylight.
We bought an IPAD 2 in December for our everyday use and both love it for email and surfing the web.
I don't consider it ok for daylight navigation use on the bridge

I now have an Asus Eee tablet , the android version of the Ipad and I believe the screen is very viewable in daylight.
If I can figure out how, I plan on using it for navigation.

That is the one I will have shortly. I love my droid phone......

That's xtra funny because just this morning I had this conversation with my daughter Grace:

Grace: Dad, did you get the Asus tablet yet
Me: No, but Jay from AOG did.
Grace: Oh, really, cool, does he like it?
Me: Don't know, I think he just got it, might not have even turned it on yet
Grace: Yeah, he doesn't seem that technological

Actually I have used it quite a bit, I even downloaded a bunch of apps, my favorite right now being my "days left" which is at 82.
My grand daughter and I wached some "Flipper" episodes thru Netflix, and I do e mail.
Once the weather warms I will test the built in gps for accuracy.

Checkout the SeaTow App for weather and tides info. It's GREAT!!!

In October I moved my new 2000, 28TE from Beaufort NC to Punta Gorda FL and the 2nd day out on the AICW the Garmin 3206 plotter died and we used my iPhone 4s with the Navionics app for two days as our plotter. It was hairy but it worked great and we never "kissed the bottom". In Jacksonville I replaced the plotter with a 740s only because I didn't want to change sonar etc. otherwise I'd have gone with Raymarine. We also had my MacBook Pro onboard with MacENC charts and also access to the Salty Southeast Cruisers Net online guide plus the Doyle's ICS Cruising guide with mile by mile Head-up alerts and marina info. Could not have done the 995 mile trip without any of the above.

Sorry but I have to chuckle at reliance on electronics and think of my dad. When I was in my 20's he used to have me move his boat from the Chesapeake to south Fla in prep for Bahamian cruises. I did the ditch many times with a crew of drunks, a compass and paper charts. We used a lead line because we didn't trust the depth finder! Of course there was only LORAN (which required special charts and some sorcery) back then. No mishaps in 4+ trips, at least not while under way!
