1971 A25 ready for a sea trial after my purchase 2 years ago

Post by SamNassar »

Good Evening to everyone,
2 years ago I purchased an A25 #1143 that sat in a storage yard in Essex MA for several years. The original engine was removed due to a faulty winterization, The owner moved on and the boat sat shrink wrapped for several years. Other than the engine problems, and acknowledging that I didn’t have a clue what a A25 was about, I could recognize that the owner had expected to be able to keep using the boat after that winter. The boat was organized inside and everything was there to indicate that the boat would be recommissioned in the spring and used. The interior softgoods were clean and some were still the original plaid fabric while the forward portion interior cushions were professionally upholstered with Blue marine fabric. I feel now that I got a really nice, well maintained Albin, especially now that I have spent many hours going through the boat and watching some European YouTube videos of A25s. Isn’t as well done as a few but it is still in the very acceptable category. The mooring canvas is identical to most other A25s , right down to the Royal Blue sunbrella fabric.
After the boat was hauled back to my farm in NH, I asked the hauling driver to look for a trailer, soon he came up with a trailer that was not quite roadworthy and probably a bit over kill by size and length, 64 yes 64 rollers. I pulled the boat up onto the trailer just to move it around the property, I didn’t know at the time that the aft set of rollers interfered with the propeller and didn’t even meet the hull bottom by about 10 inches but I blocked the hull and waited until I was sure I could get the boat otherwise seaworthy. At the time 2 years ago, Craig’s List was my go to, as luck would have it, I found a Yanmar 3 cylinder sail boat take out partially disassembled but otherwise mostly complete. I found a second 3 cylinder Yanmar marine engine that was apart but had lots of work done and had 80% parts. I got the first one running on a stand I welded but by then it was winter and I go to Fort Myers and my other boat and condo. In that time I was overwhelmed with projects and I posted on this site that I would be interested in selling “as is”. Not much response and since I had a working engine and transmission with a used right hand 17” propeller I found in St Petersburg FL my real question was whether I would spend$1000 bucks for a new 98” long 1” diameter propeller shaft with coupling. I did decide that I would keep going with the project as time allowed between the farm maintenance and my waterfront property in Harpswell ME. Lots of work back and forth to fit the engine and exhaust, but I am happy with the way it came out and I refitted 4 wheel disc brakes and new hydraulic lines
Also new surge coupler and 7 pin wiring for the lights. I have refilled some of the interior and have all the electrical components sorted and working. Even the windshield wiper.
I will be anxious to sea trial next May and get a feel for how it handles coastal Maine cruising?
I know that there may be other A25s in Maine and I would like to meet up with anyone interested before I go to Fl
Thanks for your help in other questions as I proceeded
And I look forward to your expertise after my first sea trial

Best of luck with recomissioning your A25. What model is your Yanmar engine? A 3GM30F or newer series would be perfect for the 1971 variant. 24 HP is plenty to drive the full displacement hull to hull speed. The fresh water cooled version is preferable.

The Yanmar I have is an early 3GM. From my research the first series had replaceable cylinder liners that protruded above the engine block a few thousand inches. The head gasket sealed on the exposed cylinder liners By design. Later
Models discontinued the liners and the pistons rode in the parent bore with no projections for gasket sealing. My engine block was machined flat with no projections so I had to use the newer model head gasket which required a genuine Yanmar part. Careful attention to torque sequences during the installation and no more leaks. It does have the fresh water cooling and the reduction gear is 3.14 so I found a RH 17x16. Propeller used in Florida
