Onboard TV

Post by Mike Ebert »

Since I haven't seen it in any other posts, I thought I would mention the Slingbox set-up I use on my boat. For those not familiar, for $150 you buy a box and connect it to your cable TV or satelite box at home. The box is then connected to the internet through your home computer. You can then access your entire list of channels through any other computer, anywhere with internet access.

I bring my laptop on board and as long as I'm in cell range I can be fishing and crying about the 49ers at the same time. I liked it so much that I bought a second box for my office and I now have all the cable channels and all the satellite channels. No monthly charges or subscription needed other than buying the box.

By the way, I have no affiliation with Slingbox other than it is way cool.

What's the image quality like? Can you receive your 49ers games via OTA broadcasts? Have you tried an antenna?

The quality of the reception is very good. There is an occaisional freeze for the buffering but otherwise it is crystal clear. Here in the Bay Area, there is no way you get any reception with an antenna, too many hills. Also, I can get a whole lot more channels including ESPN, Fox Sports Net, etc. I was in Santiago, Chile on business and watched the Sharks play on my laptop in my hotel room.
