What would you re-power a 28 TE with ?

I’ve got a pair of 300 Suzuki’s and a bracket bought for mine. Not for the faint of heart and surely a bad investment but can get to them for service.. Mine is a flush deck and the yanmar was stuffed in tightly.
Time will tell.

Yeah, the Yanmar 6LP-STE came from the Toyota Land Cruiser, but the 6 cylinder Land Cruiser engine was not sold in the US, hence we got super expensive parts in the colonies. ($280 for a belt tensioner)

motor performs great its a 4 cylinder 300hp. i run at about 3200rpms cruising at 18-19 knots burning about 11 gph. fortunately i was able to reuse the ZF trans from my peninsular.
without installation the motor will run you about $33,500 +/-

When it was time to repower our 2000 TE we stayed with the yanmar 315 6lpa st2. Staying with the yanmar was the best choice with our mechanic. Easy to do the work without having to replace throttle controls and gauges. We blew it up in the middle of summer so turnaround time was valuable. Very happy and a lot quieter than the 6lp sta

With the Yanmar (aka Toyota), I have learned to shop around internationally. The parts pictured are from various Ebay sellers in Saudi Arabia or Britain. All parts were under $200 shipped.

My marina still managed to bang me $900 in labor but for $1100, I can’t complain with a complete timing belt replacement.

What model is your Yanmar?

The yanmar is a 6lp. Various forms apply but they are fundamentally the same engine.

In its Toyota guise it is a HDFT-e 110 if I can recall. That’s important when buying Toyota parts like cam belts as some have 112 teeth and the others are 114. I’m on my second belt, tensioners and pulley and buy them from roughtrax4x4 here in the U.K. they’re listed as camkit15 on the website. All genuine Toyota parts.

The same base engine is also the Nanni 6.420 and the Yamaha ME 422 high output. The Nanni gives 320bhp at 3600 rpm and the Yamaha 275 at 3800rpm.

I’ve researched the Volvo option extensively and would give it a miss, purely on fuel usage. As previously said it’s around 110 gph where the same rpm the yanmar is around 8. The sweet spot for the the Volvo D6 and D4 is 2600 rpm for economy which won’t give you the performance.

I would also consider the yanmar 8lv 370 as an upgrade for performance. Yes, they will fit as I’ve seen two such installations but space is tight.
