Who uses Navionics on an iPad

Hello,

We are close to purchasing our next A25 and I would like to find out who uses the Navionics app for iPad and which version you use. I am new to iPad navigation and want to get the right setup without going through as many Navigation programs as possible. This could possibly save me time and headaches before we complete our purchase.

I did when they released the relief shading version for a while. It works really well while you’re running. I eventually upgraded to 3 Raymarine axiom screen with relief shading so I could incorporate radar and AIS overlays.

Thanks Tree. The boat I am looking at has a Raymarine C120 with depth sounder, external GPS and an ICOM radio with AIS communication. They have an iPad interfaced with this setup as well. Not sure if the iPad comes with the boat, but I have an iPad that will work if it doesn’t.

on my Android phone and tablet I have been using the Navionics "Boating" app, with the very reasonable chart subscription for a few years. it's great. No integration with any sensors. Just the chart and GPS on the phone/ tablet.

I use an iPad but it’s not connected to any instruments on the boat. I’m happy with it until it shuts off from getting too hot in the sun. I need to figure out some cooling/shade setup.

You need to get a cellular version of the iPad. The cellular chip allows for Navionics to utilize GPS. You can’t use a standard wifi iPad.

I use Navionics on an iPad and love it. I still have a older navigation unit that I use as back up and for depth/radar, but no substitute for zooming in and out with your fingers.

Instead of a cellular iPad, you can get a blue-tooth GPS unit for maybe $30 that will give a position signal to your iPad and any computers onboard.

Over-heating is an issue. I have mine mounted to a post in front of the helm and sometimes drape a cloth over the back to keep the sun off so there is rarely an issue. If it does get too hot, then 10 minutes in the fridge and it is reset. Same for the blue-tooth GPS - I cover that with a spare hat.

I have the bigger iPad, and the battery will also run down after a few hours when the screen is full brightness (which you might want on a sunny day) and charging with USB. I am looking at installing a USB-C charger connected to the 12VDC system to solve this.

All of this... I replaced an old 12V cigarette lighter type outlet with a USB A and USB C outlet and it works great to keep the iPad charged. I did get a cellular iPad but no service and it works fine. The "stick it in the fridge" solution works but it's less than optimal... I have my old Garmin (2009???) for depth and the charts are fine. I have Navionics on my phone as a second backup also... and paper charts if all else fails.
