I finally used that dead space for my rods. I used 2 inch central vac tubing to provide separate slots for each rod (total of six). In a perfect world the tubes would have been flush with the wall but the guides on my spinning rods were too big and I could only find 2 inch tubes. I also had to do some cutting in that dead space to make room further back for the 6 tubes.
