Turbocharger
Mt boatyard contacted me with a maintenance problem of a rusted joint on my Albin 28 turbocharger. The cost of the respiratory was very high and included 28 hours of labor. I attached a picture of the rusted joint and wondering what the downside would be if I didn't spend the money. New parts and labor are almost 10k.
Any perspective would be appreciated. Thanks, Jeff

Re: Turbocharger
Seems way high.
What engine?
(I don’t recognize that as a Yanmar part)

Re: Turbocharger
Looks like a replacement turbo and mixing elbow - that’s probably around $5000 from yanmar. Where they got 28 hours labour from I don’t know - that’s a days work tops.

Re: Turbocharger
Its is a 28TE with a Yanmar engine. The quote is right at 5k for the parts and then the 28 hours of labor.
Thanks for your reply!

Re: Turbocharger
The labor quote is excessive. I did an R&R on my turbo two years ago and the labor hours were 8 tops in total. The risk of doing nothing is that you have an exhaust leak in your engine room and your engine is ingesting dirty exhaust through it's air filter. That no bueno. Don't run your boat until the repair is completed.
I see that you are in MA. Look into a rebuilt turbo through D&W Diesel for about half the cost. They have a location in Oxford, MA just west of Worcester. I drove out to drop my old turbo off for a core credit, to order a rebuilt and then had them ship to me. You could just ship your old core. I had the rebuilt turbo in my hands within a week. The rebuilt will be as good as new.

Re: Turbocharger
Replace the turbo, and elbows now. My turbo blew while on vacation in the Keys. Shops were backed up for months due to the aftermath of hurricane Irma. Luckily a shop in Marathon could spare an afternoon to do the work. Max labor 4 hours. Still cost $6700 for turbo only.
Look into stainless steel exhaust elbows, dry and wet. I had a local shop in Stuart, FL , who specializes in exhaust systems, fabricate a single piece dry/wet elbow. Problem solved for a long time.

Re: Turbocharger
Same goes here. Was cheaper to buy and ship everything from California ( think that where they are?) to the U.K. than buy just the dry elbow from yanmar.
Really superb quality castings and machining and I’m a precision engineer so know a good job when I see one.

Re: Turbocharger
I agree regarding HDI. Here's a photo of their kit. The castings and associated parts are all top quality, and their customer service is very good. I highly recommend.

Re: Turbocharger
I had to install the HDI kit 2x...long story you can search for...first elbow was defective, not their fault, they replaced it, but total replacement time with the wife helping me was 2-3 hours each time. I agree with Kevin, the turbo R&R can't be more than a day's worth of work. This pro yard needs 3+ days to complete the job?

Re: Turbocharger
Just for reference. I’ve had my turbo removed today for some maintenance seeing as it’s never been removed in the past 2000 hours.
It’s taken my mechanic just over an hour to remove - that included draining the coolant.

Re: Turbocharger
So the cost and time for my turbo.
Decided to remove it since it had just over 2000 hours on it.
Rebuild shop found I had a crack internally on the wastegate port and the V Band wasn’t clamping properly.
They’ve taken everything apart - replaced the bearing etc as per a turbo rebuild and cleaned everything. Welded the crack and cut the V clamp off, bored and sleeved with new V clamp and balanced everything up.
My mechanic took just about an hour to remove it all and just about an hour to replace. While he was at it, I had an oil change and all filters. He also checked the engine alignment after my issue with the rope last year.
I supplied all the parts for the service and antifreeze. He supplied all the necessary gaskets for the turbo.
Repair of turbo £895 + 20% VAT
Paid the mechanic cash £300.
Just had the chance to trial the boat, which I add has been in the water for a year now, half a tank of fuel and two people aboard.
3950 rpm on yanmar tach (previously 3750) and 22 knots against the tide.
I am a actually now 100 rpm more than when the boat was surveyed almost nine years ago in the US.
Good result I say.

Re: Turbocharger
I used HD marine for my replacement a few years ago. I had to cut off the hose too. I wouldn’t put back on the yammer carbon one when stainless is a cheaper option.Carl wrote: ↑Sat Feb 13, 2021 10:51 am https://hdimarine.net/product/hot1-kit/
