How do I remove the Lehman 4D61 fuel injectors?

Post by Jon Fuller »

Hello, I have the 27FC, 1984, with Lehman 4D61 fuel injectors. How do you remove the fuel injectors? Once you take the nut off the high pressure fuel line into the injector, I have no idea how to remove the next part to the injector - the part that has the fuel flowing in one side of the injector to cool it and then out the other side of the injector and on to the next injector. I would liken it to a daisy chain of hoses. What an I missing to the process? Obviously, on the fuel cooling part is off, I can use a long socket wrench to remove the injector from the block. 62.25 lbs of torque to put them back in. Any suggestions or videos I can watch? Thank you for your help. Jon

Those fuel return hoses are just pressed on, you should just be able to pull them off. There is no pressure there to deal with, so it's very simple.

To remove the injector body, I don't think a standard deep socket will work for you, at least it didn't for me. I bought a 27mm deep socket especially for the job, but it did not have enough clearance inside to fit over the injector. So I cut my socket in two, and then welded the ends into a pipe sleeve, as you see here.

I only found out afterwords that special "injector sockets" are available -- that's what you need for the job.

Tom - Thank you very much. You are a life saver! I could not tell about the return hoses and was afraid to yank them off. Thank you as well for the socket recommendation. Really appreciate it.

Update: I bought the same super deep socket online for $40.00. The socket was deep enough but is milled on the inside so it is wide at the bottom but about an inch up it starts to narrow down. It would not slide all the way down over the injector. Took it to a local welding shop. Cut the bottom inch off. Welded a piece of pipe over it like in the above picture. Paid the welder $80 for what looks like a professionally manufactured tool. Clean welds and painted. Works like a charm. I was going to use a cheaper chrome socket but the welder wanted to use the black steel socket. Welder would have needed to remove the chrome before welding.

The return fuel line between the injectors is 7/64" ID.

I know you already paid the price and it looks great. Next time try the local pawn shop. I found one there. I rebuilt my injectors last year.
