88 hp yanmar turbo intercooled
how can i tell if the turbo is working? when in neutral i bring her up to 3000 rpm and i do not hear any difference (turbo engaging). is this unusual??? i'm still trying to solve the 3000+rpm smoking issue

You won't get any appreciable boost in neutral because you are not loading the engine. Hence you won't hear any turbo whine.
If you are getting close to your WOT rpm then your turbocharger is working.
What is the WOT rpm for your engine?
What is the max rpm you can get?
What color is the smoke?
What condition is your air filter in?
When did you last service the intercooler?
Fuel filters?
Answers to these will let us get started trying to help you.

wot i believe is 3700. the surveyor got it up to 3600 and was pleased. i havent been able to go over 3000 while props engaged without clanking and gray smoke. not sure if the smoke will go from gray to black as i bring her down to 2000-2500 soon as i see the change. i will inspect the air filter. as far as the service on the intercooler goes, i don't know. i bot the boat just a few months ago. appreciate any and all advise.
