Wipers installed

Post by Jeremyvmd »

After months of staring at the parts and a few weeks of actual winter I was able to make it down to the boat today to get some work done. Today's project was pantograph arms. Took me and my dad about 2hrs to install and adjust the wipers. The starboard wiper basically dropped in once I cut the old arm off. The center one was set for 8* or ark, had to adjust that to 11* which was the max. This turned out to be perfect for that arm. Port was the pain. It was set to 6.5, had to adjust it to 8* and the swing is great, BUT now it won't park. Dad was adjusting and swears he touched nothing else but it just stops wherever now. Gonna have to figure out how to set the park and then set it on that arm another day. But the project is done and it looks awesome. Seems to wipe 2-3x as much of the glass. Plan is to get longer blades when these wear out. I went with 20" on all 3. I think I'll do 22 on the center and 24-26" on the side windows. Im gonna try and attach a vid...

Wow, that looks awesome! I know this has been discussed in other threads, but would you mind sharing part numbers and source's for them?

Below I've included links, I got my parts from defender.

Arms - it says it only works for 80* or less swing, I have my center on 110 and seems to be working fine
http://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?pa ... id=1212033

Blades - currently I have 20" on all three you could prob go up to a 22 center (esp if you stayed with a 80* sweep) and easily 24s or even 26s on the sides

Jeremyvmd:
The blue wire is the "park" wire. Check to be sure it has a good connection.
Don.
PS I went with 20" length for the center and 24" P&S; works well.

Just installed the same setup... Afi wiper motors. Any insight as to how to adjust the degree of coverage? It does not appear the cover even comes off the motor.

You have to remove the wiper motors from the boat, then you have to take the cover off. then follow the below

I've been looking to install pantograph wipers on my 2004 28TE Flush Deck as the standard wipers are a joke. My only question is on the arms themselves. I installed them on my last boat without a problem, however the AFI motors that are on the Albin have a long stud that protrudes several inches out past the window. As such, I'm not sure how you are supposed to secure the wiper arm to the stud and then secure the arm mount to the boat??? Is there a long spacer provided? Only other solution would be to add a piece of starboard to fill the gap. How did you install yours?

I just removed the nut off the stud, slid the bracket on and secured it to the boat, as luck would have it I'm at the marina so I snapped a quick pic for you. I'm not sure exactly what u mean so hopefully these help.

Jeremy,

As you will see by the pics, my wiper studs protrude much longer than yours, and the frames of my windows aren't nearly as flush as yours either. They actually project about 1/2" outward. So I guess I'll have to use a piece of starboard or some sort of spacer so I can attach the adapter for the second arm above the window.

That's only down to the length of the stud on the wiper motor. They come in three lengths. Your pantograph wipers will still work fine even with the stud sticking out that far.

Like tree said, should work fine. There are enough joints in the pantograph arms to prevent binding

When I did mine I cut a 1/2 plastic board and used as a spacer block. Drilled a center hole for the shaft to go through and then mounted pantogragh arm. Been many years and has worked fine.

Maye Marie,

That's exactly what I pictured having to do. I'll add that to my spring project list :)...
