storage over quarter berth ceiling

Post by special k »

while searching for my 28te i saw one with the portside panel over the quarterberth removeable with this area being used for storing fish rods.
since i keep many rods on my boat i need a place to store them, other than the berth or salon.

before i make a mess or cause damage i'd like to hear from others as to the procedure. are the "buttons" simply screw covers?
i may even consider fabricating a cabinet face with door to fit this panel opening.

Special K,

The buttons are screw covers. I have never taken this particular panel off. To be honest I'm still trying to figure out in my head which one you mean. I'll have to take a look at it the next time I go down to the boat.

One of the boats at the recent NE Rendezvous had this feature, one I plan to copy this winter. I have considered mounting 6 -9 lengths of PVC tube to slide the rods into.

love the idea of the tubes!
since she will be at my home for winter storage i hope to complete this project prior to next season.

i truely love my albin and the fact that her previous owner was not a fisherman, but the tournament edition designation in her name would lead you to believe she had more "fishy" thoughts in her design.
that being said i still opted for the 28te over pursuit and other express boats.

with a new set of rocket launchers installed and learning to carry my appropriate rods with me each trip i hope to bloody her decks with some tuna later this season. already christened with the inshore species, fluke, stripers,& blues.

will try to learn some techno skills necessary to post photos as my project comes to fruition.(but i've been saying this for a couple years)

cheers!......mick

I ran the pvc tubes in mine. I cut holes for them in the front panel and re upholstered it and it looks pretty sanitary.

The problem is that there was not enough room to run 8-9' tubes. I think I was only able to fit in a couple of them, as they hit the flush deck rod holder tubes. I did put in four more shorter ones that I use for my two piece rods. It came out great. Up unti then that was wasted space.

Here is a picture of what I did with my boat. I think there was only room for one or two that would fit full length. The others have to take two piece rods.

Suggestion: if you do this make sure that you have the aft end of the tubes lower (at least as low as possible) than the forward end. In mine sometimes in a following sea when I bury the bow, and the boat slows quickly, a couple of the rods want to slide forward.

I now find this very useful space.

Does anyone have any good pictures of this option? I'm considering making this modification but would love to learn more from those who have already done it.

I had plucked these from a 28TE ad years ago. They're not fishing rod storage tubes, but pull out drawer storage. A pretty slick idea for additional storage on the 28 in an area of wasted space. The carpentry is on the low end, but the concept is there.

Garth / Endurance on this site did this to his boat and it was first class carpentry with a cherry faced door matching the Albin interior and the drawer on high end glides. I saw his boat at a rendezvous and swore I was going to do this, but my 28 TE has moved on.
