A27 Keel Construction

Post by obertra9 »

Anyone know from experience what the keel construction is (say 10 foot forward of the stern)? Is it fiberglass over wood? How thick (from bottom to top) is the glass below the wood? How thick is the wood? and how thick is the glass above the wood? I am considering a modification to the keel for trailer purposes. My trailer supports the boat from the keel primarily.
thanks,

Do not know if this will be of any help, but you might check the information posted by greatlaker221 on keel. He got pretty deep into it. Thanks, Mark

Mine sits on the keel on it's trailer too - at least 95% of the weight, with side supports for stability. I'd be very surprised to find there was any wood at all in the keel. I drilled three 3/8ths holes in the aft end of then keel to attach a strap to the rudder and it was all solid glass there. Many owners have added depth sounder transducers inside the keel at various points and they would not work well if there was any wood in the keel. I would bet it's a solid glass layup running the length of the boat

Roger, I'm sure mine (87 FC) is solid glass and about 5/8" thick. No problem resting on the keel. Ben

Hi
My '84 a27ac has no wood in the keel area. I drilled a 2" hole about 18" fwd of the prop shaft 2" from bottom to fut a so called gar board drain. The hull was barely 1/8" thick" . I had hoped it might nave been a little thicker.
But boat is 30 yrs old so I guess it works.
