I have a 1994 28t albin. I am leaking hydraulic steering fluid from the bottom and running down the front of the helm. I am told it could be the front seal as this is the one that goes bad. Has anyone attempted to replace the front seal ?? what is the part number? or do I need to get the whole helm seal kit ? ... where can I order the parts. I am told also that to get into the body of the device it is very trickey and should be left to a certified marine mechanic.. any hints or wheer I can go to get detailed instructions on the replacement of the seals if in fact I am able to replace all the seals. thanks for you input

Just rip it out and put in an autopilot pump. Between the autopilot and bow thruster you'll be fine without a helm

We had the same problem a couple of years ago. It was a simple matter of replacing the seal. Marc at Teleflex helped us out. 604-248-3858. He sent the seal and the special oil filler tube.
My notes from Marc say this:
Very easy fix when oil is leaking out front:
remove steering wheel
round plate is held in with 3 screws
Remove screws; remove plate
pull out old seal - put in new
But I wasn't the one who did the work . . .
You should be able find the model number on the steering hub (not sure if that's the right word) behind the access panel at the head mirror. Ours is SeaStar 1.7, HH5271.

Here's a shot of the helm pump with the wheel removed, you can see the 3 screws on the face plate.
The wheel may come right off, may be stuck. A claw type puller like this will pop it right off. And if you save the cost of the "certified marine mechanic" the tool will pay for itself. And as you can see it comes in handy when it's time to do a cutlass bearing or shaft seal
