1996 28TE stern tube diameter, where to measure?

Post by bvukelich »

Sorry, I'm extremely ignorant on maintenance, etc. I need to order a new PSS kit and I know the shaft is 1.5" diameter. My problem is I don't know where to measure and there are many kit options varying by 1/8", see link:

http://www.propellerdepot.com/shaft-sea ... nFilters=4

I'm looking for confirmation on where to measure. I took a pic and placed 3 colors of lines (green, yellow, red) where I believe the measurement should be taken.

Better yet, can anyone just tell me what size the stern tube is or which kit I need for the 1.5" shaft on our 1996 28TE???

Appreciate any input.

Cheers!

That is the stern bearing housing, not the stern tube. The stern tube is the shaft log that is fiberglass into the hull and protrudes into the bilge area under the engine.

Would a 96 boat originally have a dripless seal? No chance it was an upgrade at some time?

The stern tube on my 2000 is 2-1/2" in diameter.
A 1996 may have had the Tides Strong Seal or a conventional stuffing box.
