Jay is correct on all points - With the supplied handle, the Sea Tiger is rated for 500 pounds of pull in the faster speed and an incredible 1100 pounds in low gear . . . . try pricing an electric rated at 1000 pounds + and see what you'd spend and what size electric cables you'd need to power it

I would make a shorter handle for everyday use on a boat as small as ours - A 15 to 18 inch handle will require a much smaller swing and while it will reduce the pulling power, even if you wound up with 250/550 pounds it would still be more than a boat our size would require and the shorter handle will make it much easier to use

Sounds like you got a real bargain - My friend paid almost $1K for his Sea Tiger . . . . and that was 10 years ago. He had his sail maker make him a custom Sunbrella cover for it and it still looks brand new today. I can get you a photo and dimensions of the OEM handle if you need - He'll be back in port early next week

Winter project commenced. Rebuilding the SeaTiger Windlass. I order a set of desassembly instructions from the internet, sourced out of Scotland. I can tell you the instructions were...how shall I say this, lean? Very brief.

Right away I realized the clutch nut is sezied on the shaft. And the drum won't come off either.

This is the drum and you need a puller to get the thing off. After locating a 8" puller at harbor freight, I had to grind the puller arms to shape them so they could get around the drum.

Drum came off with the puller. I felt real progress.
Then I went back to the clutch nut. Heat and reheat. Penetrating oil. Reheat. The clutch nut has to be removed from the shaft as it holds the gipsy and clutch cone in place. The whole point of rebuilding was to replace the clutch cone, since the gipsy would slip under extreme pressure.

Eventually I put the clutch nut in a vice. I got a piece of flat bar stock as a lever and I went at the nut. And I heated, and sprayed penetrating oil and I tried to crank it a bit. When the shaft slipped in the vice, I used the keys to keep it in place. Then I tried to crank again. And there was a nice pop as my harbor freight wussy vice broke.

Almost gave up on the maijn shaft, but then decided to take the whole rig to a local machine shop and let someone with a bigger vise take a crack at it. Two days and a couple bucks later, its in pieces.
