Re: Water tank crud
To add to this some more - I was still getting a winterising fluid smell from my hot water side. I've run a couple of bleach solutions through the tank now and the smell has gone, water tastes good too. We generally put fresh I. The tank every weekend anyway but a good clean has made a difference

Re: Water tank crud
A friend of mine doesn't use the antifreeze in his water system, he uses a gallon of inexpensive vodka and puts it through the system. He says it works and doesn't leave the smell of the antifreeze. I haven't done this, but thought it sounded interesting......a waste of vodka, but interesting.

Re: Water tank crud
I have used the vodka technique on my sailboat during the winters in NC and VA, and I never had an issue with the fresh water system freezing. I was one bottle for less than 30 gallons of fresh water, and my system was pressurized. I had no after-taste or smell and it seemed to work well. I have no idea if it would work farther north where the winter gets considerably colder.

Dilute alcohol is what they use for antifreeze in automobile windshield wiper washer fluid.
Vodka may be even cheaper and much more seamanlike....
