Hour Meter
The PO installed a new volvo RPM/Hour meter and the digital hour meter does not show half the time. So i am wating to install a separate hour meter, where would be a good location for me to wire the hour meter to ??? of course i want to use a connection that come on when the engine is running... Volt meter ??? Oil pressure meter?? or any other suggestions.. Or what could be causing the new hour meter not to work,,, thank you

Re: Hour Meter
If it's intermittently not working I'd be checking all of the wiring connections on the gauge. The ground in particular.
Remind me what engine you have. I can't recall.

Re: Hour Meter
Depends on the hour meter. Some will run simply with voltage, others need the pulses from the flywheel sensor. If you get one that simply needs 12V just wire it to the key "ON" position. But why not troubleshoot and fix what you have?kjg1951 wrote:where would be a good location for me to wire the hour meter to ???
And Doug, as far as the engine:

Re: Hour Meter
Yes Rob, I saw that - however there are a number of different volvo types. If, like me he has a D6/D4 then it's probably a bit more complicated as these are "electronic" engines and the hours are coming from the ECU.

Re: Hour Meter
So there must then be a diagnostic scanner that can plug into the ECU, like OBD-II in the automotive industry, that can determine whether or not the data is being transmitted properly from the engine to the gauge(s)?

Yes, but based on his original post I'm inclined to think he has a wiring issue at the gauge.RobS wrote:So there must then be a diagnostic scanner that can plug into the ECU, like OBD-II in the automotive industry, that can determine whether or not the data is being transmitted properly from the engine to the gauge(s)?
If it does require a scanner he'd have to go to a certified Volvo shop. Apparently access to the engine info tools is pretty locked down.
