Confused Register Dinghy??

Ok so I bought the Achilles Inflatable and it has Conn Registration numbers. After reading Chapman Piloting book it states that if the dingy is being used as a primary tender, under 10 hp, to transport back & forth to a mooring the numbers can be the sames as the registered vessel with the addition of # 1... ie: N Y 45679 -1
Does that mean I must pay & register at NY Motor Vehicles & obtain sticker or am I able to just put on the numbers that match the mother vessel?
How many out there actually register & put numbers on there dingies?

NYS DMV requires registration for all motor powered boats, even if the motor is not the primary source of propulsion. So either break out the wallet or the oars, the choice is yours

In CT if it has a motor it has a registration.

The same appies to Taxachusetts. If it is powered...it requires a registration. And that is when you pay your sales tax.

Here's a cut/paste from the NYS DMV website. Seems other NE states are consistent.

Does my boat require a registration?

The law requires you to register any boat that is motor-driven and is operated on public waterways in NYS. The boat requires a registration even if the motor is not the primary source of propulsion. If you operate the boat in NYS, you must register the boat with the DMV. After you register your boat, you receive a registration certificate that indicates the registration number assigned to your boat and a set of registration stickers.

You must paint or attach the registration number to each side of the bow of the boat. The characters must be:

* block letters not less than three inches high,
* a color different from the hull and easy to see,
* legible from 100 ft. away during the daylight hours,
* the only number on the front half of your boat.

You cannot transfer the registration number to another boat.

The registration sticker shows the month and the year that the registration expires. Attach each sticker in line with the registration numbers on each side of the hull, and three inches toward the stern of the boat.

Made up these plaques for each side of the bow. Since I do plan to deflate and rollup at times I don't want to deal with the stickers coming off. Even if I stencil painted the black numbers I think the orange DMV sticker may be problematic...

Note - Self-adhesive is not recommended for boats that are rolled up for storage, regularly inflated/deflated, or extreme hot/cold weather.

PVC cement or Hypalon adhesive is our recommended method for affixing your boat number plates.

May be the adhesive on the DMV sticker too..

I received a PM about the vinyl material I used for the plaque so I figured I'd post it here as well. I used a $12 vinyl 4x4 post sleeve from Home Depot that was subjected to my table saw..

Darn Rob, you do such good work,, can't ya just send me the plaque and numbers and make another one for yourself, lol.
Actually the CT #@Z numbers were already painted on in black, i was going to paint over the black letters with gray, then figure what to do. Were did you get the stencils from?

I used vinyl stick on letters/numbers from the local True Value hardware store. Home Depot sells stencils if needed.
