Turbo whine-28te/Yanmar

Post by sail410 »

Has anyone been able to deal with turbo whine from the 315 Yanmar? It seems it is there in the background as a slight high pitched whine. Or is it just my engine? Thanks in advance,
Bill

It means the turbo is working just fine.

I'm with Jay! :) When my "Beast" started whining I knew it was cranking out the big ponies! 8)

I've always heard it on turbocharged boats when running at high cruise or WOT.

I kinda like that music.....
Anything over 3000 rpm, and it is definitely there, but not bothersome to me or my wife.
Only one guest has ever mentioned it, my buddy Phil. He hates it. So I don't make him buy lunch....and he can't touch my beer.

Then again....my wife tells me "I'm deaf in one ear....and can't hear out to the other."

"What?" "Did you say something, honey?"

I ran a Dodge/Cummins pick up many years. It was "juiced up" and I modified the turbo and intake system. That puppy would whine so much it would turn heads on the street.
One trip comming back from Rochester after working on the new Albin in the wee hours wife was taking a nap in the passenger's seat. I would just slightly tap the go pedal changing the pitch pf the turbo whine and that would wake her up. I know that was mean but that was my entertainment on the 4 hour ride home  It worked every time.

The smell of diesel fumes and turbo whine, it can't get any better than that, can it?

When my turbo is whining it drowns out my wife's whining. A win win situation.

I'm with Red Stripe! I can't wait to hear that whine and smell the diesel! I notice the whine when I'm throttling up but then the thrill of being at the helm of my Albin cancels it out.

Has anybody tried to quiet the whine? Something like a turbo blanket used on cars or a sound chamber ahead of the intake could help. Do Air Seps make any difference?

An "air filter" will quiet the whine. Some engines only use a cheap foam filter unit. If that is the case you could go with an S&B filter (similar to a K&N, but stouter) or an Air Sept style if available.
