Propane tankless water heater

Post by bccanucker »

I sure could use some help. I am on the hunt for a propane tankless water heater like the Paloma or Bosch. Is there anyone out there that has one of these type of units installed on their boat?
I am finding information online to be geared around houses and summer cabins. Quite some years ago they were in the marine marketplace but as people installed them in their heads they ran into some carbon monoxide problems.
The RV marketplace around our area has propane/110V water heaters but not the tankless ones.

Hi Roy,
Here are a couple

http://www.tanklesswaterheatersdirect.c ... temain.asp

Another brand that came to mind is Eemax. http://www.eemaxinc.com/home

BUT...check with your insurance carrier. I've read they are illegal in Canada. Not in the US yet. But that could be only on sail boats.

Thanks for these. I hadn't run into them yet. The eemax is only electric. Need propane. The first one looks promising and actually make RV and boat models.
Propane not illegal in Canada that I know of. I have had propane fridges and stoves over the last 25 years and only thing our insurance has said is that we cannot leave the boat for more than 24 hours with a propane device running. We also just bought one of these portable Mr. Buddy heaters and it is great.
These tankless propane water heaters seem to have a bad rep in the marine world and I've seen a lot of manufactures specify "not suitable for RV or marine use". I can remember back a long time ago where practical sailor magazine came down on them when Paloma units killed a few people. I have 2 best boating buddies one with a Paloma and one with a Bosch that bought about 5-8 years ago and are totally happy with them. I can't find their units on the market today. Paloma seems to have stopped making the smaller ones.
I am running accross 2 different types of units.
1. Naturally asperated. Which I'm told means open flame and the vent must go straight up from the unit
2. sealed combustion. Which means exactly that and the vent can run horizontal and also the vent is 2 pipes one inside another and air is drawn in from outside and exhausted out through the middle one

I'm thinking #2 is probaly the way to go but I cant seem to find a supplier that talks boat so ergo this thread to see if I can find someone who has installed one.

Sorry about the mis-information. :?
I should know better about quoting stuff from the Internet that I haven't personally researched.

John: Just to let you know, your first link turned out to be really good. It led me to
http://www.precisiontemp.com/pt_rvmd_m500.html
which is a very unique manufacturer of a marine propane tankless water heater. A bit pricey but with a bunch of advantages. I am researching :D
