The salon in our 36' aft cabin has 4 incandescent lights (one in each corner). Pretty much all all these trawlers that I have seen have this arrangement which does not do well for lighting our kitchen side. Are there any that have upgraded this arrangement and if so what did you do?
For years I have said I was going to bite the bullet and buy some Alpenglow lights ( http://www.alpenglowlights.com/ ) High price a supposed to be high satisfaction. Anyone with good or bad words to say about these lights?

Re: Overhead Salon Lighting
We installed one of their brass berth lights in-place of the plastic junk that was factory standard over the aft berth.
A friend suggested "puck" lights as auxillary lighting; 12v small, flush or recess mount, etc. Haven't looked into it yet but not a bad idea. The only point of concern for me is the heat that they generate?? But maybe there are LED options too?

Re: Overhead Salon Lighting
Michael: So, do you like that Alpebglow light?
I agree with your concern about heat on the halogens. I put a couple inside 2 large closets on my previous boat. Very very hot. Thought I was going to start a fire. Put in one as a birth reading light. Twas hot. From my reading so far LED's are still not perfected.

Overhead Salon Lighting
I bit the old bullet and ordered the Alpenglow lights. Two of their 9 watt dual power CFL overhead lights for the salon and 2 of the LED reading lights for our birth. Won't be installing them until we get home at the end of April but just wanted to say what beautifully made quality USA products the fixtures are. Just holding them in your hand you can feel the weight and finish that let's you know why they cost more. If anyone is thinking about getting this companies stuff, I highly recommend. (Even my wife likes them)
