bow thruster wiring

Post by Don »

Heres another vetus bow thruster question.
I have an 89 sportfisher 32, and a mechanic recently told me that the wiring from the bow thruster to the battery is too   thin. He said the existing wiring is 4 gauge. He reccomends upgrading the wiring to 2 gauge(a thicker wire). The battery is located approximately 20ft. from the bow. Any one have an opinion on this matter?
Thank you.

On what authority did he make that recommendation? If I were you, I would consult a voltage drop chart for the wire in use. That should tell you whether or not it is acceptable. Also, have someone place the back of their fingers against the wire while you run the thruster. If it gets warm, it's likely undersized.
