OOOOOOOOwwwww That video reminded me of what could have happened om "Mahalo First Voyage to New World" post... I felt myself leaning and bobbing each time that vessel got smashed by a wave. So glad they made it into the inlet in the end..Scary stuff talk about feeling helpless in a situation :(

Wow. It looks to me like he actually probably made it in safely; obviously with a lot of flooding. But if a boat had a properly rigged engine and working, adequiately sized, bilge pumps, he might have been able to recover.

At first, I was thinking, "he doesn't have a chance". But as he surfed in and cleared the bar, I was surprised at how quickly the surge died down, and how protected the waters were once he was inside. Most of our bars up here are very large and broad, and can take an hour to cross. And once your across, you're still miles from port.

This the mouth of Noyo river, the bar is only a few 100 feet, it is less than a mile from the boat basin to the open sea, outside the bouy. This guy was on my dock when I was still at Noyo, still with 2 cylinder diesel would burn 5 gal per day (24 hours).

Looking at the aerial photo, I'll bet that bay can get pretty rough and confused when the seas come up. It must just bounce the waves off the rocks and amplify the swells right at the mouth of the river. Scary. Still, though, I'd take it over the Columbia River bar any day. 50' swells, 40' depth, and hundreds of shipwrecks.
